The Øresund Region reaches across the border between Sweden and Denmark, and is one of the most dynamic Regions in Europe, developing rapidly. COMS2009 takes place in Copenhagen, the capital of Denmark, which sits right in the centre of the Øresund Region. A quarter of the combined GDP of Sweden and Denmark is generated in the Øresund Region.
The Øresund Region is home to the largest concentration of highly educated people in Northern Europe. Being a succesful education and research hub, liberally sprinkled with world-class innovative environments, the Region also boasts a well-developed working relationship between industry, higher education establishments and the authorities.
With no less than 11 Universities, the Øresund Region comprises a fruitful growth center for innovative high-tech companies. Especially biotechnology, pharmaceutical, and ICT industries are heavily represented. A number of science parks, one of them the largest in Europe, and the abundance of research and technology transfer institutions nearby, makes the Region an attractive environment for technology and knowledge based companies, who need to be at the cutting edge of research and know-how.
The two sides of the Region are connected by the Øresund Bridge – the fixed link between Copenhagen and Malmö – and by ferries sailing the route between Helsingborg and Elsinore.
Copenhagen is easily accessible from all parts of the globe. Copenhagen airport is the largest international airport in Northern Europe and operates direct flights to more than 120 destinations. Within the Øresund Region itself, journey times are short thanks to the extensive investments made in good infrastructure. The Øresund Region features a unique blend of proximity to both big city environments – with their ethnic and cultural variety – and relaxing countryside with beaches, forests, mountains and open landscapes.
