IMST - Institute for Micro- and Nano Systems Technology
The Institute for Micro- and Nano Systems Technology (IMST) at Vestfold University College does research and education in Norway within applied micro- and nano systems. As the largst academic group in Norway in this area the Institute offers a graduate education programme at both the master's and Ph.D level. IMST has advanced laboratories for the building of micro- and nano systems and can support its clients in development, building and characterization of microsystems for their specific applications.
NanoStorage
- A Norwegian company, LingVitae AS, has developed a new DNA technology of significant value in the data storage market - Design Polymers.
- NanoStorage AS has acquired all product rights and patents related to the data storage market.
- DNA is the ultimate storage media with respect to its storage capacity, its unique potential for self-replication, and its unparalleled durability.
- One gram of Design Polymer DNA in crystalline form can store the equivalent of 100 Exabits (1018)
- In a world where businesses demand secure, reliable, and available data protection, and face the challenge of managing these greater demands with the same, or less, resources, Design Polymers has the capability of answering these needs.
- With Design Polymer technology, NanoStorage will enable end-users to gain orders of magnitude more storage capacity than currently available technology offers. As many corporations find that the volume of data generated by their computers doubles every year, NanoStorage offers to be the most scalable solution available.
- The data storage market is a global multi-billion dollar market, annually.
- The company offers a significant value proposition to technology partners, enabling NanoStorage to gain tremendous distribution capabilities, through its partners, quickly.
- NanoStorage's technology will offer the greatest value within the networked storage segment. By 2012, Networked storage is predicted to make up 70 percent of the data storage market - up from 30 percent, currently.
- The company will have the potential to make its technology the standard in DNA data storage.
NCE Micro- and Nanotechnology
NCE Micro and Nanotechnology is the result of a long term commitment to microtechnology in the region of Vestfold. The companies in the cluster comprise the most important commercial arena for micro and nanotechnology in Norway.
Norwegian Centres of Expertise (NCE)
NCE is a governmental initiative for internationally oriented clusters with the highest potential for further growth. NCE is operated by The Research Council of Norway, The Industrial Ddevelopment Corporation of Norway (SIVA) and Innovation Norway.
poLight AS
poLight AS has been developing wafer based functional microoptics components since 2000. poLights technology is based on proprietary and patented methods for creating active optical components based on deformable polymers. poLights main project is to develop the world's smallest and most cost-efficient autofocus lens for micro cameras. The poLight technology is characterized by wafer scale manufacturability, compact size, low cost and high optical quality.
poLight deformable polymers have already been qualified in a Variable Optical Attenuator for the demanding telecom industry, having passed strict Telcordia quality testing procedures. This represents a proven technology platform for development of highly cost effective micro-optics components like e.g. tunable diffraction gratings, tunable lenses and image stabilization devices.

SINTEF ICT
SINTEF is a multidisciplinary Norwegian non-profit research foundation with about 2000 employees. The Microsystems and Nanotechnology
Department (40 people), part of the ICT institute, specializes in the design and fabrication of advanced silcon sensors and actuators. The services provided ranges from design and feasibility studies, process development, development and testing of new sensors and small scale production for industrial customers. The main R&D fields are MEMS, micro-optics, microfluidics, and radiation sensors. Designs may be realized in our state-of-the-art automated 800 m2 clean room fabrication facility, MiNaLab, (ISO9001:2008 certification). Examples are pressure sensors, gas sensors, flow sensors, accelerometers, chemical reaction systems, X-ray and other radiation detectors, evaporators, diffractive optical elements, etc.
The department has a proven track record in the successful completion of national as well as European
projects. Recent EU projects include eCUBES, MicroBuilder, MicroActive, NETGAS, HASTAC and HISVESTA
Nano - UiB
www.uib.nano.no
In 2006, University of Bergen, Norway set up a program in Nanotechnology and Nanoscience. The program is highly interdisciplinary involving five faculties. The program is centered around the following topics:
Nanobiology - Nanotechnology applications in biology and medicine
Nanoprocess - Nanotechnology for energy and process technology
Nanobasic - Fundamental experiments/metrology, measurement principles, theory & modelling and
Nanoethics - Ethical and social implications of nanotechnology.
Cooperations have been established with several companies. This year Nano-UiB received funding from the
Norwegian research council for establishing a Nano-platform supplying nanostructured, bio functionalized surfaces for industrial and research purposes.
University of Bergen offers a bachelor degree in Nanotechnology and a Masters degree in Nanoscience.
